AFRICAN BIRD PHOTOGRAPHY
“Everyone likes birds. What wild creature is more accessible to our eyes and ears, as close to us and everyone in the world, as universal as a bird?”
– David Attenborough
Fine Art African Bird Photography
This is a curated gallery of my Fine Art African Bird photography. Bird photography is a niche subcategory of wildlife photography.
I commenced my photographic journey with bird photography during the early 2000s. Bird photography teaches the two pillars of both wildlife and landscape photography: know your equipment and, of course, extreme patience.
Southern Africa is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to a breathtaking diversity of species, from majestic birds of prey soaring over the rugged Drakensberg Mountains to vibrant waterbirds wading in the serene coastal and inland regions.
There is a symbiotic relationship between birds and their habitats. Over 150 bird species in Southern Africa are now threatened (vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered), driven by habitat fragmentation from agriculture and urbanization, poisoning, collisions with power lines, and invasive species.
I aim to capture the essence of birds in their natural environments, celebrating the unparalleled beauty of Southern Africa’s birdlife and emphasizing the urgency of conservation.
